What was the “Truman Doctrine”?
The theoretical idea that communism was evil and politically oppressed people, and democracy was good and offered freedom.
What changed in the US policies?
Before the second world war they followed a policy of isolationism and after they followed a policy of containment
What is isolationism?
Staying apart and not getting involved in the affairs of others
What is a policy of containment?
limiting the spread of something, during the USA it meant containing and preventing the spread of communism.
What was the Marshall Plan?
The practical aid that USA gave to war-torn European countries to stop them from turning communist
When was the Marshall Plan?
Between 1948 and 1952

How did Stalin see the Marshall Plan?
Showed that the USA was trying to extend their influence in Europe.
Undermined the role of the United Nations as it wasn’t Americas job to protect the world.

Stalin’s belief that the Marshall Plan was a way of using economic might to divide Europe in two, and establish an American economic empire in Europe
What was the effect of the Marshall Plan on international relations?
- confirmed that the Grand Alliance was now dead, USA was a direct opposition to the Soviet Union
- Stalin believed that the West was trying to crush the soviet union
- It successfully tied Western European countries into supporting the USA
What was Cominform?
A political organisation set up on Stalin’s orders

Why did Stalin set up Cominform?
So he could have more control over satellite states
