Domino theory
the theory that a political event in one country will cause similar events in neighboring countries.
Gulf of Tonkin incident
American ships traveling in the Gulf of Tonkin are said to have been fired at with torpedoes, which was a lie. Ended up with US President Johnson getting a resolution to have more direct US involvement in the Vietnam War.
Tet Offensive
one of the largest military campaigns of the Vietnam war. Marked the peak of US involvement during the war. Also caused American people to turn against the war in big numbers.
“Phased Withdrawal”
Nixon’s policy (vietnamisation) to turn the war over to south vietnam gradually. (Plan to get US out of fighting)
CounterCulture
people who didn’t behave like most people in the 60s. They stood against many of the ideas that guided the Vietnam era.

what some people called those who were counterculture. They were energetic and they only cared about music, protest, and ideas.

African American woman who sang jazz and collaborated with white musicians to create lots of new music. Discovered by John Henry Hammond.

White man who was the most influential musician of the Vietnam era. Discovered by John Henry Hammond.

African American woman who sang jazz and was discovered by John Henry Hammond.

the paying of hush-money to keep people quiet and to have others lie in sworn testimony to judges and juries.

theory by Ronald Reagan’s that creates a business friendly environment by making it easy to start factories. Leads to new jobs and economic growth

Unfree, tyrannical, clumsy communist Russia. People called it this because of its controlled Communist society.
Mikhail Gorbachev
Russian Prime Minister who was a communist yet pragmatic leader who knew changes in Russia needed to be made.
Tiananmen Square incident 1989
Chinese rebelled in Tiananmen Square, and the government sent troops to open fire on civilians. Many were killed and nothing was accomplished.
First Gulf War (8/1990-2/1991)
a coalition of nations started by President Bush that drove Iraq out of Kuwait. Created an independent Kuwait, free from control.
Ronald Reagan
US president who famously said, “Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” Was also against big, suspicious government programs.

Rainer Zitelmann. This quote is implying that Socialist/Communist experiments have failed 24/24 times across 5 continents in the last 100 years, showing how their not good ideas for long term.

5th event;1961;Building of a wall to stop East Germans from fleeing to West Germany. Important because it showed the freedom being taken from East Germans.
