Karl Marx (when and why important)
1818-1883 and wrote book in 1848;Father of communism who wrote the book communist Manifesto. Basically gave the general idea of communism which was later taken into action by Lenin.
Vladimir Lenin (when and why important)
1917-1924;First leader of communism in USSR who put the ideas of Karl Marx into action.
Joseph Stalin (when and why important)
1924-1953;Lead a very controlled communist government, killing many of his own people. Important because determination to expand Soviet communism to eastern Europe were significant causes of the Cold War.
Totalitarianism
a form of government that attempts to assert total control over the lives of its citizens (political philosophy)
Communism
The elimination of socioeconomic class struggles by creating a society where everyone shares the benefits of labor and the state controls all property and wealth. (economic philosophy)
Iron Curtain
An “imaginary” barrier placed after WWII that concealed the Soviet Union and others from non communist countries to prevent open contact with the West
Truman Doctrine/Containment (when did it succeed and when did it fail?)
$400mil program of assistance organized by Truman to stop the spread of communism to other countries. The start of the Cold War. Succeeded in Korea and failed in Vietnam.

billions of dollars in aid given to the 16 nations after WWII
Mao Zedong
leader of communists in china who led them to victory and into control of the mainland
Chiang Kai-shek
leader of Nationalists in the Chinese Civil War who lost and was located with all his followers to continue his leading in Taiwan.
Joe McCarthy
U.S. senator who accused people for being communist or spies for USSR
McCarthyism
Constantly accusing people of doings things their not (especially being communists)
Edward R. Murrow
Famous reporter who publicly challenged & humiliated McCarthy on tv
Dwight D. Eisenhower (and when he ruled)
1953-1961;U.S. president who warned everyone of military industrial complex during his farewell speech.
Military Industrial Complex (and why its important)
The relationship between weapon makers and the government. Dangerous because industrial companies want money, and weapons = war.
