Missile crisis outcomes for Cuba(3)
- Castro upset by Khrushchev’s deal w US but needed support of USSR
- Cuba stayed comm and highly armed. Nuclear missiles removed but Cuba remained a base for comm. supporters in South America. Cuban forces intervened to help comm side in civil war in Angola 1970s
- Castro kept control of US businesses etc. This remained source of dispute between US and Cuba, but Castro never backed down
Missile crisis outcomes for Cold War(4)
- helped thaw cold war relations between USA and USSR, both leaders saw how nuclear war almost happened
- permanent ‘hotline’ phone link from the white house to Kremlin
- 1963 Nuclear Tests Ban Treaty- limited nuclear Weapons testing
- soviet arsenal proved to be enough threat to the US- superpowers avoided direct confrontation
Missile outcomes for the USA(2 good 2 bad)
- Kennedy greatly improved reputation for country and west
- successfully stoop up to hardliners in own gov & critics of containment and those who wanted us to invade Cuba
- had to remove missiles from Turkey (in secret) NATO allies unhappy but better than nuclear war
- had to accept Castro’s Cuba would remain a communist state in US’s backyard
Missile outcomes for USSR(3 good, 3 bad)
- Publicly Khrushchev show as peacemaker making the first move towards compromise
- keeping Cuba safe from US action was Maj. achievement for Soviets. Cuba was valuable ally and useful base for communist support in South America
- Crisis exposed us to criticism from allies - e.g newspaper articles felt us was unreasonable to have missiles in Turkey and object to Soviet missiles in Cuba
- Khrushchev was forced to back down and remove missiles and forced to put them on the decks of ships so the US could count them - HUMILIATION
- Khrushchev’s actions in Cuba made no impact on underlying problem of missile gap
- 1964 Khruschev forced from power by enemies within the USSR
