New knowledge is processed through three modes of thinking in this order: Enactive representation, (action-based), Iconic representation (image-based), and Symbolic representation (language-based). Learning occurs with help from others.

Theory of Cognitive Development stated biological development leads to learning as the learner passes through various ages/stages. Disequilibrium creates opportunities for the child to use current cognitive abilities to attain higher levels of learning, but disequilibrium must be kept balanced or the child will become frustrated with learning. This theory is sometimes considered Constructivist because it is thought the individual constructs cognitive learning as a result of passing through the stages.
