COGNITIVE INTERVIEWS Flashcards
Outline for key principles that would enhance recall according to GEISELMAN
Context reinstatement
Report everything
Change perspective
Reverse order
What is context reinstatement
It is mentally because the context of the event
E.g. weather / people
Details can then act as a trigger to help us recall more information
What is the report everything technique
It is spectacles every detail they can remember even those that may seem trivial
This highlight anything that may be overlooked or cue a mem
What is the change perspective technique
It is a big concern is the event from someone else’s point of view
This is less egotistical, more objective and thus promotes a more holistic view
What is the reverse order technique
It is good because the events in reverse chronological order
This is to verify accuracy and identify errors and prevent schemas filling in the blanks
Related evidence into improving eyewitness testimonies with cognitive interviews
GEISELMAN: showed pts vid on simulated crime, tested recall by standard interview + cog interview. Cog interview promted most info ∴ show it is more effective
FISHER: Trained detectives to use CI w/ real eyewitnesses – CI considerable incr. the amount of info recalled incl. foresnsically rich info
BUT need to be careful with misleading info
Requires special training + police officers do not have the time to conduct full CI
Experimental Reductionism: reduces accuracy + amount of info recalled by eyewitness to the technique used to interview them.
