cognitive explanation depression - ao3 Flashcards
1
Q
ellis abc model = therapy
A
- From Elliss ABC model effective treatments were developed such as CBT and REBT
- REBT = argue with the depressed person and alter irrational beliefs
- have been successful in changing beliefs and reliving symptoms
- especially when paired with drug therapies
2
Q
other explanations = biological
A
- A biological approach = genes and neurotransmitters may cause depression
- Low levels of serotonin in depressed people
- The success of drug therapies suggests serotonin does play a role = drug inhibits the reuptake of serotonin by increasing the amount of the neurotransmitter in the system
- given that there are so many explanations = diathesis-stress model should be used = genetic vulnerability and negative environment
3
Q
becks theory - evidence terry
A
- Terry (2000) assessed 65 pregnant women for cognitive vulnerability and depression before birth
- They found that those women judged to have high in cognitive vulnerability were more likely to suffer postnatal depression
4
Q
reactive depression and not endogenous depression
A
- reactive = triggered by life events = how we respond to them is based partly on beliefs
- endogenous depression = cause of depression is not traceable
- ellis abc model is less useful for explaining endogenous depression
- limited explanation and lacks validity
5
Q
cohen young people
A
- cohen et al = assessing cognitive vulnerability allows psychologists to screen young people = identify those at risk of developing depression = monitoring them
- understanding cogntive vulnerabilty = used in CBT
