What are circular reactions?
During Piagets sensorimotor stage, circular reactions are repetitive actions done to achieve a desired response. Primary circular reactions are body focused and secondary circular reactions are focused outside the body.
object permanence
Ability to understand that objects continue to exist when outside of view, marks the end of the sensorimotor stage and the beginning of the preoperational stage.
assimilation vs accommodation
Assimilation is classifying new information into existing schemata. Accommodation is the process by which existing schemata are modified to encompass this new information
centration vs conservation
Centration is the tendency to focus on only one aspect of a change where conservation is the ability to understand that a change in shape does not mean a change in amount.
sensorimotor stage
First stage of Piagets stages, child learns to manipulate environment to meet needs and use sensory input with motor actions.
preoperational stage
Second stage of Piagets stages, characterized by Childs egocentrism and symbolic thinking
concrete operational stage
Third of Piagets stages, child can understand conservation and empathize with others
formal operational stage
Fourth and final of Piagets stages, child begins to think logically about abstract ideas.
