Cognitive Approach To Treating Depression - CBT Flashcards
What are the three AO3 PEELS to evaluate CBT as a cognitive approach to treating depression?
RTS - dep adolscents
Weakness - requires motivation and commitment
Weakness - high relapse rates
P
(RTS - dep adolescents)
RTS effectiveness of CBT was conducted by a researcher
E
He studied adolescents with dep and found approx 80% of their symptoms had significantly improved after CBT but even more (approx 90%) had improved if CBT was combined with antidepressants
L
- therefore CBT is a popular choice of treatment for dep for NHS
- however it was found there are small differences bw treatments for dep, it is suggested that having the opportunity to talk to someone about their experiences/feelings is that matters most rather than specific treatment given
P
(Requires motivation and commitment)
Despite RTS effectiveness of CBT, critics may argue it may not be suitable for everyone as it is limited as a treatment for dep bc it requires motivation and commitment
E
This is bc patients have to attend sessions over a long period of time and complete hwk e.g. writing in diary and engaging in activities once enjoyed
E
Therefore this is an issue for indv with dep as they often lack motivation
L
- therefore reducing effectiveness of CBT as a treatment for dep
- due to this reason CBT is usually more effective when combined with anti depressants as drugs can reduce symptoms of dep so client can me more motivated to attend sessions
P
(High relapse rates)
Weakness - high relapse rates
E
- this is bc althought CBT is effective in reducing symptoms of dep, very few studies have looked at long term effectivness for CBT in treating dep
E
- recent studies suggest long term outcomes are not as good as assumed e.g. a study assessed dep in approx 450 clients every month for 12 months following course of CBT, it was found approx 50% relapsed into dep within a year of ending treatment
- suggesting although CBT is effective short term, patients may need to engage in treatment more regularly to be effective long term
L
Therefore reducing effectiveness of CBT as a long term treatment for depression
