Cognitive Approach Flashcards
What is an inference
Conclusions made about mental processes through observed behaviour. Theoretical & computer models e.g memory
Computer models analogy
They view the mind like a machine that takes in information, stores it, processes it and then produces and output
What is serial processing
One process has to be completed before the next starts e.g multi store model
What is parallel processing
Some or all processes involved in a cognitive task occur at the same time e.g working memory
Evaluation: strength
Highly scientific: based on lab research which adopts an objective way of measuring behaviour e.g brain scanning techniques = greater validity
Evaluation: strength
Led to practical applications: therapies into depression which identifies maladaptive thinking that can be changed
Evaluation: strength
Less deterministic: it implies we can change our thought processes that underline our behaviour
Evaluation: weakness
Abstract nature: artificial tasks such as memory tests which lacks external validity
Evaluation: weakness
Reductionist : it assumes the mind if like a machine so fails to consider the role of motivation and emotion in behaviour
