Cognitive Approach Flashcards
What is meant by an inference?
Going beyond the IMMEDIATE evidence to make ASSUMPTIONS about behaviour that cannot be directly OBSERVED.
What is meant by a schema?
A mental framework of what we already know and believe about world around us.
Based on previous info/experiences.
Helps organise/understand new information we receive.
Assimilation and accomodation?
Assimilation is when receiving new info or experiencing something new, learning causes us to ADD new info to an existing schema.
Accomodation is when receiving new info or experiencing something new, learning causes us to CHANGE an existing schema or develop a new schema.
What is a theoretical model?
A VISUAL and LINEAR diagrammatic representation of COMPLEX processes
What are the 2 AO1s?
AO1: Cognitive approach
AO1: Cognitive neuroscience
AO1: Cognitive approach
Key terms
- Information processing
- Inputs, processed, outputs
- Inferences
- Theoretical, computational models
- Internal, mental processes
- Schemas
4 AO3s?
AO3- Machine reductionism (-)
AO3- Scientific approach lab (+)
AO3- Mental processes can’t be observed (-)
AO3- Cognitive neuroscience (+)
AO3- Machine reductionism (-)
e.g. emotions
complex -> soley w computer model -> utility -> adequately explain -> simplicity -> practical challenged
AO3- Scientific approach lab (+)
e.g. lab
validate -> iv -> robust -> scientific credibililty
AO3- Mental processes can’t be observed (-)
e.g. is subheading
infer -> subjective -> bias ->
AO1- Cognitive neuroscience
Key terms
- 1956 MIT Formation
- 1970s (Miller) formation of cognitive neuroscience
- Biological structures that influence mental processes
- Last 20 years – FMRI & PET
- Autopsy
- E.g. Empathy may be developed by the mirror neuron system
AO3- Cognitive neuroscience (+)
E.g. MRI disorders
cure -> treat -> reintegrate -> practical value
