Cognitive Approach Flashcards
What does the Cognitive approach suggest
-that our minds 🧠 work similarly to computers 🖥
- input (stimuli from environment 🌳) - process (thinking) - output (behaviour)
What are internal mental process’
We receive info through our 5 senses, the brain process’ this info than dictates how we behave.
Schemas
> Pocket of info that helps us organise and interpret info based on previous experiences.
-can help us predict what is going to happen
-they develop with experience and become more sophisticated
Positives of schemes
-Helps us process a lot of information quickly, which let us know how to behave and saves time 🕰
-stop us becoming overwhelmed by environmental stimuli
Negatives of schemas
-can lead to faulty conclusions and unhelpful behaviour eg having panic attack before exam because you did bad in a previous one
-schemas form stereotypes that can lead to inaccurate EWT because of ‘bias recall’ you see what you expect to see rather than what is actually there.
What are the theoretical
Multi-store memory model
Working memory model
Emergence of cognitive neuroscience
-Scanning the brain to see impacts the brain has on certain behaviour
-used to show neurological basis of some disorders
Evaluation of the cognitive approach
✔️-scientific and objective because of brain scans empirical evidence of neurological basis of the brain.
-can help with treatment for certain disorders as can provide therapy.
✖️- comparing human mind to a computer is too simplistic because it does nit take into account emotions and feelings.
- Can’t physically see the the mental process’ of the mind, so how can they be studied ?
