COGNITIVE Flashcards
Key belief
all beh is a result of thinking
Assumptions
- mind actively processes from our senses
- between stimulus and the response are complex mental processes (can be studied scientifically)
- humans can be seen as DATA PROCESSING SYSTEMS
- workings of the human mind and a computer = alike , as they both encode and store info and both have OUTPUTS
Internal mental processes
-Also known as mediational processes
- occur between stimulus and response
- operations that occur in the MIND
Egs internal mental process’
Memory , attention, perception
What are the 2 computer analogy’s
- computer model
-theoretical model
Computer model
Software stimulations of internal mental processes that are created in collab w computer scientists
Theoretical model
Diagrammatic representations of steps involved in internal mental processes
Eg of theoretical model
Info processing model - MSM (Allison and shriffin) suggested information enters brain via senses , and then moves to STM then to LTM .
^ when info is retrieved , it becomes the OUTPUT- just like a computer
Schema theory
Mental structures that represent an aspect of the world
What’s a schema?
-Packages of ideas/info, developed through experiences
- generated through past experiences , interactions w ppl and the world around , however not always accurate, can be basis of stereotypes
Name and outline a study where schemas were due to the basis of stereotypes
Allport and Postman (1947), investigated effect of stereotype on recall
In study showed white pots following pic of black person being held at knifepoint by a white man. When pots asked to recall - they misremembered black man as the criminal
Cognitive neuroscience
The scientific study of the influence of the brains structures on mental processes
Perception
Ability to see, hear or become aware of something via the senses , the way in which something is understood, regarded or interpreted
Inference
Inference is the process of drawing conclusions about general patterns of behaviour from specific observations. Cognitive psychs draw CONCLUSIONS about the way mental processes operate on the basis of observed beh in a lab study
