cognitive✅ Flashcards
what does this approach argue?
what parts do they look into?
that internal mental processes should be studied scientifically
memory, perception and thinking - which are private and cant be observed so they make inferences about whats going on in peoples minds based other behaviour
the role of schema:
- what is a schema?
- what are babies born with and what happens as we get older?
- what do our shecmas allow us to do?
- a package of info of beliefs, expectations and how we perceive things based on experience
- simple motor schema for innate behaviours such as sucking and grasping. as we get older these develop and become more detailed and sophisticated.
- process lots of info quickly like a mental short cut preventing us from being overwhelmed with environmental stimuli.
theoretical and computer models:
what are theoretical models? what are computer models?
why are they both used?
- abstract
- concrete things
- both used to help understand internal mental processes.
theoretical and computer models:
- what is an important theoretical model?
- what is this approach based on? what development has this proved useful for?
- information processing approach = suggests info flows through the cognitive system in a sequence of stages (multi- store model)
- the way computers function, seeing if it produces a similar output to humans. proved useful for the development of artificial intelligence such as machines that can have conversations with you.
the emergence of cognitive neuroscience:
- what did Broca find?
- what gave advances of Brian image techniques led to?
- damage to the frontal lobe (broca’s area) could permanently impair speech production.
- eg. PET + FMRI scans have allowed scientists to systematically observe and describe neurological basis of mental processes.
AO3:
✅2 strengths
❌weakness
✅ uses object scientific methods - the emergence of neuroscience has enabled the two fields of biology + cog. psych. to come together to enhance the scientific basis of study.
✅ real world application - contributed to the development of artificial intelligence and the development of thinking machines (robots)
❌ the approach is based on machine reductionism which reduces the validity of the cog. app. - ignores the influence of human emotion and motivation on the cognitive system, effecting how info is processed.
