cognition
mental activities involved in solving problem
thinking, language, memory and intelligence
heuristics
mental rules of thumb
-way to solve problems using estimates, shortcuts for minimal effort
representative heuristics
asking yourself how similar or representative (the you want to take) is of a class of event (courses you like)
availability heuristics
involves judging the likelihood that an event will happen in terms of how readily you can bring an instance of it to mind
-events that are more recent would be judge as more likely to happen than those less recent
confirmation bias
people’s tendency to look for information that will support their beliefs.
functional fixedness
the inability to see new uses for familiar objects
ie. unable to find screwdriver, you may not recognize that a quarter would work just as well
grammar
systems of rules that allow everyone using the language to make sense of it in the same way
