cog and bio lecture 7 Flashcards
what are the famous neurological case studies
Patient P.G for vision
Patient H.M. for memory
Patient Tan for language
Who is the visual agnosia patient IES?
75 yo male w/ bilateral posterior lesions following CVA
What did the scans reveal?
bilateral PCA stroke involving the ventral occipital lobes inc fusiform and lingual gyrus on the left and other on right. Damage to left hc and pfc.
What was the diagnosis?
visual object agnosia and prosopagnosia without alexia
what is achromatopsia?
colour blindness
What did IES not suffer?
no language comprehension or production problems. No loss of semantic knowledge
what is blindsight?
impairment to conscious visual xp of stimulus in part of visual field
What are Hemianopias?
loss of vision to left or right side of fixation
due to damage in visual cortex - not eye itself
Unconscious response to stimuli
some patients can respond to stimuli in ‘blind’ part of visual filed under certain conditions, even though consciously they don’t see anything
What is cortical blindness? Persaud and Cowey (2008)
patient GY presented w/ object in upper or lower part of his ‘blind visual field’ - had to point opp location of object. When in blind area responded above to real location do task fine in good visual field
What does this tell us about vision?
Shows different levels which visual info is processed
