Where does coeliac disease occur?
Occurs in the small intestine
What is coeliac disease?
Associated with gluten: wheat, barley and rye
- Causes an immune response in intestinal mucosa
- May cause malabsorption of nutrients
Which foods should people with coeliac disease avoid?
Gluten
Wheat
Barley
Rye
Symptoms
Diarrhoea
Abdominal pain
Bloating
Deficiency in calcium + vit D
- Higher risk of malabsorption of these nutrients.
Treatment
Lifelong gluten free diet
Assess for osteoporosis risk
- Treat bone disease
Vitamin and mineral supplements
* Prednislone - whilst awaiting specialist advice
Should coeliacs self medicate with OTC supplements?
No
Initiation of supplementation should involve discussion with MDT
