Coding Of Memory. Methodological Issues With Memory Studies Flashcards

1
Q

What are the findings of Baddeleys study?

A

Recalling from STM they tended to do worse with acoustically similar words. When they recalled the word list after a time interval of 20 mins recalling LTM they did worse with semantically similar words.

Q

What did the findings suggest?

Suggests that information is coded acoustically in STM and semantically in LTM.

Q

What did each group remember

?

A

Group 1- acoustically similar
Group 2- acoustically dissimilar
Group 3- semantically similar
Group 4- semantically dissimilar (different meaning)

Q

Issue/ Limitation of Baddeleys study

A

It used quite artificial stimuli instead of meaningful material. Findings may not tell us much about coding in different kinds of memory tasks especially everyday life.

Q

Strength of Baddeley’s study

A

It identified a clear difference between two memory stores. Gave to the idea that STM is coded acoustically and LTM is coded semantically.
