Coasts Kq3 Case Studies Flashcards
Limiting damaging activities that may interrupt the functioning of natural systems.
Visitors trying to get to teh beach in port Philip, Australia were trampling on the sand dunes and the vegetation growing on them. This led to the destruction of the vegetation and the erosion by wind of the dunes.
The beach was deprived of a natural source of sand during large storms
The authorities fenced off the dunes and built access paths to the beach to allow the dunes to recover.
Protect coastal resources by preventing resources from being exploited or depleted.
In Wakatobi, Indonesia, certain areas were identified as where fish gathered to spawn. Fishermen used to target these areas, destroying the fish population before they could spawn.
Thus, the Wakatobi National Park was established to protect these spawning fish by marking of areas where fish gathered to spawn, preventing the use of commercial fishing during spawning season.
Restriction of development on coastal areas prone to natural areas.
The large earthquake that hit Tohoku , Japan caused a tsunami that swamped large areas of the Japanese coast.
Beach nourishment
Siloso, Palawan, and Tanjong beaches on Sentosa, Singapore. Sand was brought in to replenish these beaches.
The sand was obtained from another beach or dredged from the sea floor fom Indonesia and Malaysia
Planting vegetation on the dunes to make the dunes more stable
Triton Place, Western Australia.
Planting grass on the dunes stabilised the dunes along the coast
The roots of the grass anchored the sand which prevented the erosion of the dunes
Replanting mangroves
An example of where mangrove replanting can be found is on Bintang Island, Indonesia. Since 2007, over 18000m2 of mangroves have been replanted along the Sebung River.
Encouraging coral reef growth
In the Maldives, a coral reef program was started to curb beach erosion. Steel structures placed off the coast were charged with low-voltage solar-generated power to speed up the growth of coral on these structures.
Sea walls
Sea walls are built in thousands of locations around the world such as the Isle of Wright, UK.
Gabions
Gabions were used to protect East Coast Park when it was first reclaimed.
Breakwaters
Breakwaters are used to protect the beaches at East Coast Park, Singapore.
Gryones
A series of groynes were built along the coast of Eastbourne, UK.
Tetrapods
Used in Crescent City, California to defend against coastal erosion.
