Coasts Flashcards
Biological weathering
When flora and fauna break down the rock eg growing roots
Chemical weathering
Rocks dissolve as a result of slightly acid rain water
Wave cut notch
Waves attack the base of the cliff by hydrolic action. The constant attack of waves forms a notch.
Wave cut platform
After a wave cut notch the overlying rock collapses as its unsupported and the cliff will retreat whilst doing this
A bay
A bay is where land curves inward surrounded by water
Headlands
Cliffs that stick out into the sea and are surrounded by water on there sides
A spit
A stretch of beach at one end of the coastline caused by longshore drift and by waves depositing material
What is a groyne
Low lying wood or concrete structures which go out into sea to catch sediment and widen the beach
What is a sea wall
Big concrete walls at the foot of the cliff to prevent erosion taking place
Rock armour
Big boulders placed at the bottom of the cliff to absorb the waves energy
