Coasts Flashcards
What is a concordant coastline
Contains different types of rock with bands of less resistant and hard resistant ones which run parallel to the coastline.
What is a discordant coastline
Contains alternating bands of hard and soft rock running perpendicular along the coastline
Where are sandy beaches found in
Sheltered bays- they are wider than pebble beaches and slope gently to the sea
Where are pebble beaches usually found in
Areas where cliffs are being eroded and where there are high energy waves
The profile (cross section) of a beach is?
Rarely smooth. At the top is a storm beach with sediment and rocks that have been deposited by storm waves. At the bottom is a ridge of shingle called a berm.
How are spits formed?
By the same way beaches are formed- by longshire drift. When sediment is transported and deposited on a bend, the buildup gradually increases forming a ridge that extends out to sea
Why is the end of a spit curved?
At the end, the sand is exposed to the wind- it is further into the sea so it is in deeper water and so waves approach from different directions making it curve.
How are bars formed?
This begins in the same way as a spit does. Longshire drift transports and deposits sediment where there is a bend in the coastline. Deposition continues in a line across the entrance to the bay or river mouth, trapping the water.
The area behind a spit is sheltered and leads to..
The deposition of silt and mud and the formation of a salt-marsh.o
What is a tombolo
( a spit) A narrow ridge of sediment connecting mainland to an island.
