Coastal erosion landforms Flashcards
What is a landform
A feature of the landscape which has been sculpted by erosion, transportation and deposition
What is a feature of the landscape which has been sculpted by erosion, transportation and deposition
A landform
What is erosion
The wearing away and removal of material by a moving force
What is the wearing away and removal of material by a moving force
Erosion
What is transportation
The movement of eroded material
What is the movement of eroded material
Transportation
What is deposition
When material is dropped due to water loosing energy
What it it called when material is dropped due to water loosing energy
Deposition
What factors influence coastal landforms
Geology and geological structure
What are the 3 features of hard rock
More resistant, impermeable and erodes 20mm per year
What are the 3 features of soft rock
Less resistant, permeable and erodes 20cm per year
What are some examples of hard rock
Granite, chalk and limestone
What type of rock is granite, chalk and limestone
Hard rock
What are some examples of soft rock
Clay and sandstone
What type of rock is caly and sandstone
Soft rock
What are faults
Vertical cracks in the rock
What are vertical cracks in the rock
Faults
What are joints
Horizontal cracks in the rock
What are horizontal cracks in the rock
Joints
What is a bedding plane
The surface between two layers of sedimentary rock
What is the surface between two layers of sedimentary rock
A bedding plane
What happens to rocks with more joints and faults, or a bedding plane
They erode faster, more lines of weakness
What is strata
Layers of rock
What are layers of rock called
Strata
What are the 2 types of coastline
Concordant and discordant
What is a discordant coastline
Where the geology alternates hard rock and soft rock perpendicular to the coast
What is it called when the geology alternates hard rock and soft rock perpendicular to the coast
A discordant coastline
What is a concordant coastline
The same type of rock running parallel to the coastline
What is it called when the same type of rock runs parallel to the coastline
A concordant coastline
Explain the formation of headlands and bays
There is a discordant coastline, both the soft and hard rock is eroded by hydraylic action and abrasion, the soft less resistant rock erodes faster creating bays, the hard resistant rock erodes slower creating headlands which stick out into the sea leaving them more vunerable to further erosion
