Coast Flashcards
What is transportation
The process of moving sediment once it has been eroded
What is wave refraction
When waves bend as one end of the wave enters shallower water before the other, slowing it down, whilst the other end goes faster
Mud flow/mud slide
Saturated soil (full of water ) and weak rock flows down a slope
Dune regeneration
Replanting species such as marram grass to help re-establish dunes as a barrier to the waves
Fetch
The distance of the sea over which the wind blows to create waves
Discordant coastline
When different bands of rock are perpendicular to the coastline
Concordant coastline
When different bands of rock are parallel to the coastline
Berm
A ridge of higher sand or shingle ( running perpendicular to the shoreline) indicating the high tide mark
Carbonation
A type of chemical weathering where rocks containing calcium carbonate dissolve via rainwater
Attrition
Rock fragments carried by the sea knock against each other making them smaller and rounder
Beach nourishment
Artificially added sand or shingle to build a beach back up
How many groins are their at Eastbourne
94
What is rock armour
A barrier of hard rocks such as granite blocking the wave from hitting what’s behind it
How many groynes are there at Eastbourne

Transportation meaning
How sediment gets to different places
Erosion meaning
the wearing away of rock
Deposition
When waves lose energy and drop their sediment
Weathering meaning
The breakdown of rock in one place
Hydraulic action meaning
the sheer power of the waves as they smash against the cliff. Air becomes trapped in the cracks in the rock and causes the rock to break apart
Abrasion meaning
Abrasion - this is when sediment in the waves grind along the cliff face
Attrition meaning
when rocks that the sea is carrying knock against each other. They break apart to become smaller and more rounded
Solution meaning
when sea water dissolves certain types of rocks. In the UK, chalk and limestone cliffs are prone to this type of erosion.
Traction meaning
the rolling or dragging of large grains along a river bed or shore
Saltation meaning
the bouncing of sand grains as they are picked up, carried along, and dropped repeatedly by flowing water or air
