CNS Structure + Function Flashcards
What are the meninges?
Connective tissue membranes
What are the different meninges?
Dura mater
Arachnoid mater
Pia mater
What are the spaces in the spinal cord?
Epidural
Subdural space
Subarachnoid
What is CSF produced by?
Ependymal cells
What are ependymal cells important for?
Barrier cells
CSF producing + moving cells
What is the BBB?
Highly selective permeable barrier that separates circulating blood from the brain
What is the BBB formed from?
Capillary endothelial cells, which are connected by tight junctions
What does the BBB allow passage of?
H2O
Some gases
Lipid soluble molecules - eg. steroids
What does the BBB prevent entry of?
Neurotoxins
What is the function of the BBB related to its structure?
Astrocyte foot processes secrete paracrine that promote tight junction formation
Tight junctions prevent solute movement between endothelial cells
What are the 3 specialisations of the cerebral cortex?
Sensory area - translated into perception
Motor area - skeletal muscle movement
Association area - integrate info from sensory to motor
What does the primary motor cortex allow?
Conscious control of precise, skilled, voluntary movements
What is lateralisation?
Left side of brain controls right side of body
What is the limbic system?
MEMORY
What is part of the limbic system?
Cingulated gyrus
Hippocampus
Amygdala
