CNS stimulants
drugs that increase behavioral activity
- can treat obesity, narcolepsy, ADHD/ADD
Amphetamine
MOA- block the reuptake of nEPI and dopamine into the presynaptic neuron and increase the release of these monoamines into the extraneuronal space
clinical use- narcolepsy, ADHD
Anorexiants
- appetite suppressant
- stimulates the hypothalamus to release NE, reducing appetite
- Contraindications- narrow angle glaucoma, hyperthyroid, CV disease, drug abuse history, <12yo, agitation, anxiety, tourettes syndrome
- Considerations: give on empty stomach, take 6hrs before bed, no OTC’s
ADHD
stimulate the areas in the brain responsible for mental alertness and attentiveness by blocking the reuptake of DA and NE
Narcolepsy
- increase mental alertness
Migraine headaches
- caffeine, co-administered with other drugs, used to treat headaches. vasoconstriction minimizes migraine pain
Diethylpropion
signs and symptoms- elevate mood, increase motor activity, increase alertness, decrease need for sleep
Overdose-> convulsion and death
Side effects: sleep disturbance, palpitations, dysmenorrhea, tachycardia, reverse HTN treatment, decrease seizure threshold, dependence and abuse
Amphetamines side effects
restlessness, palpitation, tachycardia, CV collapse, dry mouth, N&V, impotence, libido change, growth suppression, dependence and abuse, dyskinesia
Amphetamines contraindications
glaucoma, hyperthyroid, CV disease, drug abuse history, agitation, anxiety, tourettes
amphetamines considerations
empty stomach 1st dose wakening last dose 6 hours before bed ADHD benefits in 3-4 wks avoid caffeine/alcohol no abrupt discontinuation
