Q

CN VII through what to what

A

Starts through internal auditory meatus –> enters facial canal –> geniculate ganglion –> greater petrosal n. –> Through PPG and Submandibular to the lacrimal gland (tears) and submandibular and lingual; The facial n. also goes post to the ear and gives off nerve to stapedius

14
Q

What does CNV have to do with parasympathetics?

A

They do NOT originate here but will jump on it later

Q

special visceral efferent

A

Resident Fiber of CN VII: Muscles derived from second pharyngeal arch-m. of facial expression, scalp, stylohyoid, stapedius, and post. belly of digastric

16
Q

General somatic afferent

A

Resident fiber of CN VII: auricle (external ear); tympanic membrane

17
Q

Special Visceral Afferent

A

Resident Fiber of CN VII: Gustatory fibers (taste) for ant. 2/3 of tongue and soft palate

18
Q

General Visceral Efferent

A

Resident fiber of CN VII: parasympathetic innervations of the glands

19
Q

General Visceral Afferent

A

Resident Fiber of CN VII: aids GVE in glandular secretions; sends signal back to turn down GVE

20
Q

Crazy path of CN VII to lacrimal gland

A

Starts from nervus intermedius –> through internal auditory meatus –> at geniculate ganglion but DO NOT synapse here —> joins with greater petrosal n. to form parasympathetic and sympathetic –> nerve of pterygoid canal –> Synapses at PPG –> hops on V2 –> hops on V1 the lacrimal n. branch –> the lacrimal gland (tears); The facial n. also goes post to the ear and gives off nerve to stapedius

21
Q

Saggy unilateral face, things sound loud, no tears

A

Problem with CN VII

22
Q

Saggy unilateral face, things sound loud, no tears, AND loss of balance

A

problem at cerebellopontine angle where CN VII and CN VIII are

23
Q

Facial nerve takes a turn at

A

Geniculate nucleus

24
Q

Four branches of CN VII

A

Greater petrosal
N. to the stapedius
Chorda tympani n.
Fibers from auricular branch of CN X

25
Carries pre ganglionic parasympathetic ganglion to lacrimal gland
Greater petrosal n.
26
why do you get an increase in sound
the stapedius n. cannot cause stapedius m. to contract which silences things
27
nerve you can see in ear
Chorda tympani
28
Nerve you can puncture in ear easily
chorda tympani because it is just below tympanic membrane
29
knock out chorda tympani what happens
dry mouth, lose taste in 1/2 of 2/3 of tongue, things are loud
30
Path to the sublingual and submandibular glands
Starts from nervus intermedius --> through internal auditory meatus --> enters infratemporal fossa--> geniculate ganglion (but just through, not cell bodies here-sensory only) --> chorda tympani branches out near TMJ; V3 (lingual n. of it) joins chorda tympani; they both go to the submandibular ganglion as post ganglionic fibers
31
Important branch of V1
the lacrimal n. because it will receive parasympathetic fibers to go to the lacrimal gland
32
Sympathetics originate from
T1-L2
33
Path of sympathetics to the head
from T1-T4; superior cervical ganglion --> terminates where internal carotid artery bifurcates --> post ganglionic fibers run periarteriolarly (on arteries) --> most right to places; sympathetic to lacrimal is on opthalmic artery
34
Ganglion which sympathetics run through
Superior cervical ganglion
35
Pathway of Special Visceral afferent
From ant. 2/3 of tongue --> lingual n. (branch of V2) --> through chorda tympani --> cell body in geniculate ganglion Also from soft palate
36
deep petrosal n. is post or pre ganglionic?
Post b/c relayed at
37
innervates parotid gland?
CN IX but 7 runs directly through it!!
38
N. branches of muscles of facial expression
5 branches, Temporal, Zebras, Buccal, marginal mandibular, cervical; run through the parotid gland
