Cloud Computing (Week 2) Flashcards
1
Q
What is cloud computing
A
Cloud computing is a model for delivering IT as a service. “Cloud” refers to the actual data centres that house the hardware and software
2
Q
What are the 5 key characteristics of Cloud computing?
A
- Broad network access - users can access resources over the network using laptops, phones etc.
- Resource pooling - computing resources are shared by multiple users
- Rapid elasticity - users can scale up or down the amount of resources they’re using very quickly
- Measured service - resource usage is metered by measuring your storage e.g., cpu hours
3
Q
What are the three service models for cloud computing
A
- Infrastructure as a service - provides virtual machines e.g., Amazon AWS
- Platform as a service - tool for app development e.g., Google app engine
- Software as a service - using a software that others have developed and offer a service over the web e.g., Microsoft 365
4
Q
What are the 4 deployment models of cloud computing
A
- Private cloud - controlled and used by one organisation
- Community cloud - computing environment provisioned and managed by a group of organisations
- Public cloud - available to the general public
- Hybrid cloud - mixture of the above
5
Q
What are 4 opportunities of cloud computing?
A
- allows for the renting of services rather than having to buy and maintain
- ubiquitous access to a virtual business environment
- opportunities to experiment and innovate
- efficient economies of scale

Q
What are 3 risks of cloud computing?
A
- cost of change from familiar systems
- achievement of promised benefits may not be automatic
- financial, organisational and emotional risks of change
