Describe how to catheterise a male dog

A
  1. The patient may be restrained in standing or lateral recumbency
  2. Clean the prepuce
  3. Ask your assistent to open the outer packaging of the catheter
  4. Pre-measure the catheter from the tip of the penis to just in front of the pelvic limb (remember to maintain aspesis)
  5. Lubricate the tip of the catheter using sterile lubricant
  6. Ask you assistant to extrude the penis from the prepuce
  7. Insert the catheter into the penis and advance
  8. Resistance may be felt when you reach the os penis and the ischial arch (as the catheter reaches the ischial arch, pull the penis gently away from the abdomen, before advancing the catheter further
  9. If the catheter will not advance, a smaller diameter may be required
  10. Stop advancing when a flow of urine is seen or the catheter has been inserted to the pre-measured length
  11. Use sterile saline to inflate the balloon

Describe how to catheterise a male cat

A
  1. The patient should be sedated or anaesthetised and placed in lateral or dosal recumbency. Draw the hindlimbs cranially and reflect the tail out of the way
  2. Clean the prepuce
  3. Ask your assistent to open the outer packaging of the catheter
  4. Extrude the penis by exerting gentle pressure on either side of the prepuce
  5. Insert the catheter into the penis and advance
  6. As the catheter passes into the urethra, grasp the prepuce with your fingertops and pull the prepuce ventrally before advancing the catheter further
  7. Stop advancing when a flow of urine is seen or the catheter has been inserted to the pre-measured length
  8. Use sterile saline to inflate the balloon
