Clinical lab stuff Flashcards
what comprises the carotid sheath in the horse?
common carotid artery, recurrent laryngeal nerve, vagosympathetic trunk, tracheolymphatic duct
what is one function of the nuchal ligament?
supports the horse’s heavy head during grazing
what is the jugular groove bordered by?
sternocephalicus ventrally
brachiocephalicus dorsally
Did the dog have a subclavius and omohyoideus muscle?
No
Why is venipuncture performed in the cranial 1/2 of the external jugular vein?
Because the omohyoideus muscle lies behind the external jug in this area preventing injection into the common carotid artery
What comprises Viborg’s triangle?
Sternocephalicus tendon of inserting caudally, the ramus of the mandible cranially, and the linguofacial vein ventrally
What is Viborg’s triangle an important landmark for?
surgical approach to an enlarged guttural pouch
What is the guttural pouch?
An equine-specific dilatation of the auditory tube
What is resected in Forssell’s surgical correction for crib biting?
the fused muscles forming the sternothyrohyoideus and the omohyoideus and their nerve supply from the accessory nerve
Where is a tracheotomy usually performed?
Between tracheal cartilages 4 and 6
T/F the nuchal ligament is present in the both the horse and cow?
True
What is the line of pleural reflection?
where the parietal costal pleura and the parietal diaphragmatic pleura join
what is nephrosplenic entrapment?
a condition where the intestine migrates over the nephrosplenic ligament.
What structures can be palpated through the rectum?
pelvic flexure and adjacent large colon distal small colon left kidney root of the mesentery cecum
Pathway of otis the oats?
esophagus –> stomach –> duodenum –> jejunum –> ileum –> base of the cecum –> body of the cecum –> apex of the cecum –> back out to the right ventral colon –> sternal flexure –> left ventral colon –> pelvic flexure –> left dorsal colon –> diaphragmatic flexure –> right dorsal colon –> transverse colon –> descending colon –> rectum
