Clinical Foundations - Week 5 PP Flashcards
- An ideal surface disinfectant would:
◦ Rapidly kill a broad spectrum of bacteria
◦ Have residual activity and minimal toxicity
◦ Not damage the surfaces to be treated
◦ Be odorless and inexpensive
◦ Be simple to use
* No single disinfectant product on the market today
meets all these criteria
* When selecting a surface disinfectant, you must carefully consider the advantages and disadvantages of various products
IPC across all dental care settings..
Even mobile clinics require the standard/universal precautions..
- water supply
-disinfection
-filtration system
-waste disposal
3 types of disinfectants
◦ Sporicidal = kills spores.
◦ Virucidal = kills some viruses.
◦ Fungicidal = kills fungi.
Chemicals that destroy or inactivate most species of pathogenic (disease-causing) microorganisms
* Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for contact time.
Disinfectant Level Types
High-Level - destroys vegetative bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi and
enveloped / lipid and nonenveloped/ non-lipid viruses;
bacterial spores if long exposure time
Intermediate Level - ✓ destroys all vegetative bacteria, mycobacteria, most viruses and most fungi, but not bacterial spores
Low Level - destroys most vegetative bacteria and some fungi, as well as enveloped /lipid viruses, e.g., HBV,HIV
- Iodophors
intermediate-level hospital
disinfectants with tuberculocidal action. (will stain chairs)
