What is the distribution of acne vulgaris?
Reflects sebaceous gland sites: face, upper back and anterior chest
What increases sebum production?
Androgens and progesterone
What reduces sebum production?
Oestrogens
Is a blackhead an open or a closed comodone?
Blackhead= open
What is the difference between an open and a closed comodone?
Open: blackhead, dilated, keratin filled follicle (appear black due to keratin debris)
Closed: white head, no visible follicular opening, accumulation of keratin and sebum deeper in pilosebaceous gland
What is Acne excorieé?
Compulsive picking of lesions
What is Secondary Acne?
Due to makeup or endocrine disorders such as polycystic ovaries
What is Acne Conglobata?
Comodones, nodules, abscesses, cysts and scarring
What is Acne Fulminans?
Adolescent males, costochondritis may occur, fever, arthralgia, systemic fever
What is the treatment for acne if comodones predominate?
Benzoyl peroxide or retinoids
What is the treatment for acne if inflammation predominates?
Lymcycline (3-6months) then try erythromycin or oral contraceptive pills
What is Rosacea?
Chronic inflammatory response
What are the clinical features of Rosacea?
Flushing, teleangactasia, erythema, papules, pustules
NO COMEDONES
Who does Rosacea typically affect?
Fair skinned, middle ages women
What can exacerbate Rosacea?
Heat, alcohol, sunlight
