Clindamycin Flashcards
What is indicated for?
Topical treatment to the skin acne vulgaris or bacterial vaginosis
Cellulitis, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis and intraabdominal infection
Treatment with malaria with quinine
What is the spectrum of activity?
Active against gram-positive aerobes and against a wide range of anaerobes
How do they work?
It binds to bacterial ribosomes and inhibits bacterial protein synthesis
What side effects occur with this drug?
Diarrhoea
Abdominal pain
Skin rash
Abnormal liver enzyme levels
C.difficile
Neutropenia- rare
Stevens-Johnson syndrome
What are the warnings of this drug?
Should not be prescribed in patients with a history of hypersensitivity
Use in caution in inflammatory bowl disease
Avoid in acute porphyria unless its a serious or life-threatening infection
