What is it indicated for?
A
Bacterial conjunctivitis
Otitis externa as ear drops

How do they work?
A
They bind to bacterial ribosomes and inhibit protein synthesis

What are the side effects of these drugs?
A
Stinging, burning and itching when given topically
Systemic use can cause dose-related bone marrow suppression, aplastic anaemia and grey baby syndrome in neonates

What are the warnings of these drugs?
A
contraindicated in hypersensitivity reactions, family history of bone marrow disorders, third trimester pregnancy, breastfeeding and children <2 years
