Climate Change on Alpine Communities (Abondance, France) Flashcards
Where
Abondance in the Haute-Savoie region of France
How many years of unreliable snowfall
15 years
When did it shut
2007 the ski lifts closed down
Council’s plans
- Develop other forms of winter sports which require less deep snow eg snowshoeing and ski touring
- Develop it’s summer programme to enable the town to become and all-year round resort eg mountain biking and hiking
Problem
Tourism development can harm fragile environments
- Effect ecosystems and habitats
- Trees removed which bind soil together
- Natural vegetation stripped
- Increase pollution
How are ecosystems effected
Road construction or building of houses and hotels
Tree removal
Cut down to make room for developments but as they hold soil together this can create unstable land and they also break up avalanches
How is natural vegetation stripped
Overuse of slopes for skiing and strip vegetation which has taken years to establish
Mountain biking creates gullies
Increasing pollution
Can be noise due to congestion and this causes natural landscape to lose some of its appeal and attractiveness
Other resorts
Other low altitude resorts will build ski lifts which join them to other higher resorts eg in Austria to open up the Gepatsch Glacier
New cable cars
