Climate Change Flashcards
14 weather and climate disasters with losses exceeding 1 billion dollars
91 billion dollars in damages and loses and killed 247
New Mexico overall averaged degrees
has risen 3 degrees in about 50 years
Last ten years
has have lower that average rain fall and increased the forest fires
Climate
describes an area's long-term atmospheric conditions - Temperature - Precipitation - Wind - Humidity - Barometric pressure - Solar radiation 5-10 years is long-term
Global climate change
generally referred to a climate change describes changes in temperature, precipitation, and the frequency and intensity of storms across the world
Global warming
refers specifically to an increase in Earth’s average temperature, and is only one aspect of climate change
Three factors influence climate
- The sun, which provides light and warmth
- The atmosphere, which prevents major temperature shifts from night to day
- The oceans, which stores and transport heat and moisture
Milankovitch cycles
- orbit (eccentricity)
- wobble (axis)
- tilt
Albedo
the reflectivity of earth’s surface
Thermohaline circulation
poles (cooler and salter)
center (warmer and fresher)
Greenhouse gasse
tend to absorb infrared radiation given off by the Earth’s surface, then re-emit it back downward
Radiative forcing
is the amount of change in thermal energy that a given factor exerts on the Earth’s temperature (increased by 2.3 watts/m^2)
sources of greenhouse gases
rock cycle and fossil fuel
Paleoclimate
- based off of Historical and written records (colors on paintings (reds, oranges, and yellows warmer climate) (blues, greens, and purples cooler climate))
- Tree rings
- Pollen
- Ice core
Isotopic data
different climates can change the isotopic elements
