climate Flashcards
how is latitude a climate control?
as you move closer to the poles the temp. will get colder and the precipitation will be drier
as you move toward the equator the temp. gets warmer and wetter
how is altitude a climate control?
as altitude increases, temp.decreases
as altitude decreases, temp. increases
how is mountain barriers a climate control?
mountains effect the precipitation and the wind patterns of the land around them
how is land and water surfaces a climate control?
land near large bodies of water have more precipitation and more even temperatures than land in the middle of the continent. water moderates the temp. and precipitation of a land region.
Which areas have cooler summers and warmer winters. (Less temperature variation)
Maritime
Which areas have warmer summers and colder winters. (High temperature variation) They also usually have less precipitation
Continental (inland)
How is ocean currents a climate control
Warm currents provide warmer temperatures and more precipitation. Cold current usually provide cooler temperatures and less precipitation
How are pressure cells a climate control
Low pressure has unstable air, so lots of violent wind and precipitation. High pressure mean stable air, so calm, clear days with little precipitation
Is pollution a climate control
Pollution gas traps the suns heat energy within the atmosphere, causing the temperature to increase. As the level of gases continues to rise, the temperature of the earth will also rise
What is latitudes effect on temperature
As you go to the poles temperature gets colder,As you move to the equator temperature gets warmer
Latitudes affect on precipitation
You go North or South precipitation gets dryer, as you go to the equator it becomes wetter
Altitude affect temperature
As altitude increases temperature decreases, as altitude increases temperature increases
How does altitude affect precipitation
It has no effect
How does mountain barriers affect temperature
Doesn’t affect temperature
Is mountain barriers affect precipitation
Precipitation on Windward side and dryer on the Leeward side
How does land and water surfaces affect temperature
Water moderates the Temperature
How does land and water surfaces affect precipitation
Maritime areas have more precipitation and continental areas have less precipitation
Ocean currents affect temperature
warm currents have warm temperature and cold currents have cooler temperatures
How does ocean currents affect precipitation
Warm currents have more precipitation and cold currents have less precipitation
Air masses affect temperature
Air masses have higher temperatures in cold air masses have lower temperatures
How does air masses affect precipitation
I’m Hermas brings more precipitation in cold air mass means the dryer the area
How does pollution affect temperature
Increased pollution means higher temperatures
What is weather
There is a combination of temperatures, precipitation, cloud cover, wins, relative humidity, and air pressure as they are experienced on a daily basis
What is climate
Climate refers to the weather conditions of a place average over a 30 year.

Very cold
If a city has a cold or very cold average annual temperature then we assume it is in what latitudes
High latitudes/near the poles
If the city has a warm or cool average annual temperature it is likely in what latitudes
Middle latitudes
If the city has a hot or very hot average annual temperature it is likely in what latitudes
Low latitudes/near the equator
What kind of graph represents the temperature on a climate graph
Line graph
Which three months represent summer
June July and August
In which hemisphere do we have summer during those months
Northern hemisphere
areas in the Northern hemisphere are represented by what curve on a climate graph
upward curve
areas in the Southern Hemisphere are represented by what curve on a climate graph
downward curve
what would the climate graph look for an area near the equator like?
almost flat at a high temperature
what would the climate graph look for an area near the poles like?
almost flat at a low temperature
what are the low latitudes
30 degrees S- 30 degrees north
what are the middle latitudes
30N/S-60N/S
what are the high latitudes
60N/S-90N/S
