What is clept lip and palate
Opening in the upper lip that may extendi n t o the nose or palate
It can be unilateral/bilateral, complete/Incomplete
Risk factors and causes
TORCH infection during pregnancy
Previous history, Gender (male), Drugs (e.g. Thalidomide),
Irradiation exposure, diabetes, o
mother, smoking besity, older during pregnancy
Clinical features
*Recurrent respiratory infection, feeding problems, failure to thrive, speech problems,
* cosmetically ugly, defective dentition, hearing problems
Complications
Vertebral anomaly, anorectal anomalies, cardiac defects, tracheoesophageal anomaly, renal defect, hydrocephalus VACTERL H
Treatment of cleft lip
*Cleft lip; Millard’s operation commonly done when baby is 10wks old, 10pounds weight, and 10g/dI Hb concentration (Rule of 10)
Treatment of cleft palate
Complications of surgery: Wound breakdown
Respiratory obstruction, Oronasal fistula, surgical site, infection, bleeding
