Improper fusion of maxillary and nasal structure (week 5-8)

~1/700 live births will have cleft lip
Treatment for cleft lip?
Surgery

Incomplete fusion of palatine structures (in week 9-12 of gestation)

What is cleft palate strongly linked to?
Smoking during pregnancy

What is the etiology of cleft lip and cleft palate?
- genetic
- congenital
- strong link to smoking
- other teratogens (smoking, viral infection in the mother, folic acid deficiency)
What is folic acid deficiency? Why are pregnant mothers given folic acid?
Deficiency of folic acid - which is involved in DNA synthesis. Pregnant mothers are given folic acid because the fetus can have a problem with development.
