Incidence of CLP
Caucasians, 1 per 750 live births Asian races higher Negroid races lower Males >females left side > right
A family history can be found in around 40 per cent of cases of cleft lip with or without cleft palate
The risk of unaffected parents having another child with this anomaly is 1 in 20
Aetiology of CLP
multifactorial: combination of : genetic factors environmental factors part of a syndrome familial
Environmental factors CLP
vitamin A heroin anticonvulsant drugs folic acid deficiency steroid therapy
What is the primary palate?
is that portion of the palate in front of the incisive foramen
What is the secondary palate?
hard and soft palates behind the incisive foramen
Types of Clefts:
Primary palate - lip and alveolus
Cleft of the lip and palate
Cleft palate only
Cleft Palate only
In this type of cleft, only the secondary palate is involved
Only the soft palate may have a cleft, and even that as only a submucous cleft, where only the muscle is not joined, but the overlying mucosa is intact
