CLASSIFYING ORGANISMS Flashcards
The Three-Domain System
three domains that classify organisms
Domain Archaea, Domain Bacteria, & Domain Eukarya
consists of those prokaryotes that inhabit the harshest environments. Believed to be the ancestors of Kingdom Eukarya
Domain Archaea
consists of other prokaryotes
Domain Bacteria
arose from prokaryotes through internal membranous system and symbiosis with prokaryotes
Domain Eukarya
oldest Eukarya; are flagellated with dual nuclei with a simple cytoskeleton that lack mitochondria
Kingdom Archaezoa
flagellated unicellular protists with mitochondria
Kingdom Euglenozoa
characterized by alveoli (vesicles below the plasma membrane)
Kingdom Alveolata
characterized by flagella that have hairlike protrusions
Kingdom Stramenopila
protists that evolved to lose their flagella
Kingdom Rhodophyta
decomposing organisms characterized by absorptive nutrition
Kingdom Fungi
