Classification of skills and types/methods of practice Flashcards
what is the definition of a motor/movement skill
an action/task that has a goal and that requires voluntary body and or limb movement to achieve the goal
is learned rather than being innate
what is the difficulty scale of skills
simple to complex
what is a simple skill
straighforward with barely any judgements or decisions to make.
can be taught in a fairly repetitive way
what is a complex skill
many judgements and decisions to be made, may have to be learnt in stages
what is the environmental influence classification of skills
open to closed
what is an open skill
affected by the environment
externally paced
what is a closed skill
skills that are not affected by the environment
follow a set pattern and have a clear beginning and end
self paced
what is a self paced skill
the performer controls the rate at which the skill is executed
what type of skills are usually self paced
closed skills
what is an externally paced skill
the enviornment controls the rate of performing the skill
usually involves a reaction
what is the muscular involvement skill classification
gross to fine
what is a gross skill
involves large muscular movement
what is a fine skill
involves intricate precise movements and small muslce groups
what is the continuity classification of skills
discrete, serial, continuous
what is a discrete skill
skills that have a clear beginning and end
what is a serial skill
has discrete elements that are put together to make a sequence of movements
what is a continuous skill
skills that have no obvious beginning or end
the end of one cycle of movement is the beginning of the next
repeated as a set pattern
what is the organisation classification of skills
low organisation, high organisation
what is a low organisation skill
a skill is split up into sub routines that are easily identified as seperate movements
what is a high organisaton skill
the skill has elements/sub routines that are very difficult to seperate
what makes the learning of closed skills more effective
practising them repetitively so that they become automatic
how to teach open skills effectively
using a variety of environments so a number of strategies can be created with the changing nature of the environment
how are discrete skills best taught
better taught as a whole rather than splitting them into sub routines
how are serial skills best learned
breaking them down into sub routines
each sub routine can be fully learned before the whole skill is practised
how are continuous skills best learnt
practised as a whole to get a kinaesthetic sense of the movement
what is whole practice
the skill is taught in one without breaking it into sub routines
what is part practice
skill is split up and taught in sub routines
what is whole part whole practice
performer attempts the skill as a whole and then is broken down into sub routines and then back to the whole skill
what is progressive part practice
elements are learned and then chained together to complete as a whole
