Classification of Major Tumors Flashcards
rhabdomyoma
rare benign tumor if striated muscle
rhabdomyosarcoma
malignancy of striated muscle
leiomyoma
benign tumor of smooth muscle
chondroma
notochordal remnants that give rise to lobular masses of gelatinous tissues
–most common in basisphenoid & sacrococcygeal region
Endochondroma
cartilaginous masses embedded in bone
–multiple = ollier’s disease
Codman’s triangle
a zone of reactive bone that forms at angle of periosteal reflection
Giant cell tumor
–lytic lesions resembling soap bubbles in epiphyseal regions
Ewing’s sarcoma
- -aggressive small cell tumors of marrow
- -~10-15 yrs
- -common in long bones
- -manifestations include: bone lysis, local swelling, tenderness, and systemic finding that resemble infections
hemangioma (3)
- capillary
- strawberry
- cavernous **
cavernous masses of large dilated sinusoid-like vessels
–skin, mucous membranes, cetain organs (liver & CNS)
glomus body tumors (glomangioma)
painful sensitive benign masses derived from glomus bodies
neurilemmoma (schwannoma)
neoplasm of neurilemmal cells
–common location = VIII n & large n trunks
multiple neurofibromatosis (MNF) **
type 1 = Von Rechlinghausen’s disease
–numberous pigmented skin = cafe’ au lait spots
pigmented iris hamartomas (Lisch nodules)
type 2 = acoustic neurofibromatosis
- -bilateral acoustic nerve tumors
- -NO Lisch nodules
adenomas
arise in ducts and acini of glands
adenocarcinoma
variable quantities of fibrous stroma appears w/in this type
1) carcinoma simplex = stroma = parenchymal
2) medullary carcinoma = parenchymal > stroma
3) scirrhous = stroma > parenchymal
