Classification of bones Flashcards
Long bones
Greater in length then width. They have an elongated cylindrical shaft known as diaphysis. This is the most common bone shaped. They are found in the upper and lower limbs, and also the fingers and toes. Long bones is vary in size.
Short bones
Have a length thats nearly equal to their width. Examples are carpals and tarsals. Sesamoid bones which are small sesame sheet shaky bones along the tendons of some muscles are also short bones. The patella is the largest sesamoid bone.
Flat bones
They have flat surfaces that may be slightly curved. They provide extensive services for muscle attachment and protect underlying soft tissues. Flat bones form in the roof of the skull the scapula the sternum and the ribs.
Irregular bones
Complex shape that do not fit into any of the categories. Example D hip bone and the vertebrae.
