Bone Homeostasis: Remodeling and Reapair Flashcards

1
Q

interstitial growth (Ignored)

A

Dependent upon growth of cartilage within the epiphyseal plate.

  1. zone of rest in cartilage.
  2. zone a proliferating cartilage
  3. zone of hypertrophic cartilage
  4. Zone of calcified cartilage
  5. zone of ossification

Growth in bone length occurs specifically within zone 2 as chondrocyte undergo mitotic cell division, and in zone 3 as chondrocytes hypertrophy.

The epiphyseal plate maintains its thickness during childhood as it’s pushed away from the center of the shaft. At maturity, the rate of epiphyseal cartilage production slows, and the rate of osteoblast activity accelerates. As a result the epiphyseal plate continues to narrow until it becomes epiphyseal line we see an adult.
