Classification Flashcards
classification
he action or process of classifying something according to shared qualities or characteristics
Taxonomy
defining groups of biological organisms on the basis of shared characteristics and giving names to those groups
Kingdom
a taxonomic category of the highest rank, grouping together all forms of life having certain fundamental characteristics in common: in the five-kingdom classification scheme adopted by many biologists
Phylum
taxonomic rank below kingdom and above class
Class
taxonomic rank between phylum and order
Order
taxonomic rank used in the classification of organisms and recognized by the nomenclature codes
Family
classified between order and genus. can be divided into two subfamilies.
Genus
taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of living and fossil organisms in biology
Species
group of closely related organisms that are very similar to each other and are usually capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring
Animalia
Animals are multicellular, eukaryotic organisms, which are heterotrophic, meaning they obtain nutrition from organic sources
Chordata
develop a notochord, gill slits, and a dorsal tubular nerve cord, the phylum includes the vertebrates, tunicates, and lancelets
Mammalia
mammal. female mammals nurse their young with milk, which is secreted from special glands, the mammary glands
Primate
mammals which consist of lemurs, lorises, tarsiers, old and new world monkeys, apes and humans
Hominid
primates that consist of orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees, and modern humans, and their extinct relatives
Linnaeus
Swedish botanist who created the current system for classifying plants and animals
