Arthropod Flashcards
Athropod
an invertebrate animal having an exoskeleton, a segmented body, and jointed appendages. Arthropods includes insects, arachnids, myriapods, and crustaceans.
Molting
sloughing, shedding, or in many invertebrates, ecdysis, is the manner in which an animal routinely casts off a part of its body
Pheromones
chemical substance that an animal or insect produces in order to attract other animals or insects and especially a mate
Thorax
rib cage, which encloses the heart and lungs, middle division of the body of an insect.
Abdomen
posterior segment of invertebrates, after the thoracic segment, where the stomach is
Cephalothorax
head and the thorax fused together, as distinct from the abdomen behind
Exoskeleton
external skeleton that supports and protects an animal’s body
Cheliped
one of the pair of legs that bears the large chelae in decapod crustaceans.
Malpighian tubes
branching tubules extending from the alimentary canal that absorbs solutes, water, and wastes from the surrounding hemolymph
Arachnid
spiders, scorpions, mites, and ticks, characterized by four pairs of segmented legs and a body that is divided into two regions, the cephalothorax and the abdomen
Spiders
have the mandibles converted into poison fangs, or falcers. The abdomen is large and not segmented, with two or three pairs of spinnerets near the end
Metamorphosis
biological process by which an animal physically develops after birth or hatching, involving a conspicuous and relatively abrupt change in the animal’s body structure through cell growth and differentiation
Crustaceans
lobsters, crabs, shrimps, and barnacles, characteristically having a segmented body, a chitinous exoskeleton, paired jointed limbs, and two pairs of antennae
Insects
any small air-breathing arthropod of the class Insecta, having a body divided into head, thorax, and abdomen, three pairs of legs
Antennae
paired appendages used for sensing in arthropods
