How do you define characteristics of schz?
schz doesn’t have a SiNGLE defining characteristic it’s a CLUSTER of symptoms.
What are the two types of symptoms?
Positive and negative
Positive: adds to the disorder.
Neg, something taken away. A decline in functioning
what are the two positive symptoms of schz?
delusions and hallucinations
what are the two negative symptoms of schz?
speech poverty
avolition
What are delusions?
FALSE beliefs that are firmly held despite being ILLOGICAL and having no evidence.
e.g. Delusions of persecution that someone wants to kill you, delusions of grandeur that you’re an important individual e.g. jesus Delusions that you’re under control e.g. by aliens.
What are hallucinatons?
disturbances in PERCEPTION. False perceptions that are not real e.g. AUDITORY hallucinations such as hearing things.
what is speech poverty?
CHANGES in speech pattern. e.g. lack of quality, delay in verbal responses or incoherent speech, changes topic.
What is avolition?
Reduction or INABILITY to continue or start GOAL directed behaviour. e.g. no longer being interested in going out with friends, activities once enthusiastic about, sitting in house for many days doing nothing.
Anderson identified 3 signs of avolition:
- poor hygiene and grooming
- lack of persistence in work
- lack of energy.
