Classical Conditioning Flashcards
What is classical conditioning?
learning process in which a previously neutral stimulus becomes associated with another stimulus through repeated pairing with that stimulus
How did Pavlov study classical conditioning?
- studied digestion
- Noticed that dogs salivated at mere sight of food dish and learned to associate dish with food
- Presented food with neutral stimulus (bell)
- Measured salivation in response to neutral stimulus (bell) presented alone
What are the unconditioned response, unconditioned stimulus, conditioned response, and conditioned stimulus?
UCR - innate response to unconditioned stimulus (salivation)
UCS - stimulus that automatically elicits response without prior conditioning (food)
CR - learned response to a stimulus that did not originally evoke the response (salivation)
CS - previously neutral stimulus that comes to elicit a conditioned response through association with an unconditioned stimulus (bell)
What is a conditioned aversion?
learning that occurs when negative associative memories cause something to subsequently be experienced as unpleasant (ate from a restaurant and threw up so you don’t want to go there again)
What was Watson and Raynor’s study with Little Albert?
They paired a loud noise with a rat so after repeatedly pairing the rat with the loud noise, Albert eventually gets afraid of the rat AND other fuzzy objects like santa claus and teddy bears. He GENERALIZED fear to other fuzzy objects.
