Q

Rosenhan (1973)

APFC

A

A - To see whether psychiatrists could distinguish sane from insane

P - 8 pseudopatients (3 women, 5 men)
Phoned 12 US Hospitals, stating they were hearing voices that were ‘empty’ and ‘hollow’ (unusual for SZ).
Once admitted all behaved normally, stating they stopped hearing voices when asked, partook in ward games and flushed medication down the toilet

F - All diagnosed as seriously mentally ill. Sanity never detected. Average stay = 19 days, longest = 52.
Staff depersonalised ppts, making eye contact only 23% of the time. Contact was ignored 71% of the time and pathologised normal behaviour as abnormal, such as attending lunch early or writing.

C - Unable to distinguish sane form insane in asylums. Concluded that diagnosis altered perception of behaviour, said it could lead to self-fulfilling prophecy.

R - Standardised procedure. . Repeated 12 times w 11 times the same results

A - Caused many wards to review admission processes. Reformed the DSM, now need to show at least 2 symptoms for 6 months

V - High ecological validity. All being studied (nurses, doctors) behaved normally as they did not realise they were being studied.

E - Doctors and nurses were deceived, no consent. Pseudopatients put in harmful environments. Had lawyers for the pseudopatients to get them out if needed and anonymised ppts.
