Classic Studies Cultural And Gender In Pasychological Research Flashcards
Sherif et al
Androcentric: used all male pp
Ethnocentric assumptions: used all white pp from Protestant families in Oklahoma
Emic: studied children from America with a study unique to the US
Beta bias: findings can only be applied to males, therefore, showed a gender bias when explaining findings
Baddley
Ethnocentric assumptions: only used an American sample
Imposed etic: the assumptions and application to memory encoding was based off of American pp only
Not Androcentric: both male and female pp were used in the study
Raine et al
Ethnocentric: done by university of California so the results are culturally restricted
Androcentric: as only used 2 females but 39 males so not fair representation of the two genders
Beta bias: the study ignored the possible differences in brain structure between the male and female prisoners
HOWEVER: brain structure does not differ greatly between culture or gender so findings should be applicable
Watson and rayner
Imposed etic: the findings of learning that were applied were based of of one male participant (Beta bias)
Androcentric: didn’t look at the possible important gender differences in learning of phobias between genders
Ethnocentric: one white male pp so the study was culturally restricted
Rosenhan
Ethnocentric: only clinics from North America were used
Ethnocentric: symptoms of sz will display differently in different cultures e.g India and US positive and negative voices
Not Androcentric: 5 males and 3 female pseudo patients were used
Imposed etic: the DSMis passed off of western symptoms of SZ
